The United Kingdom (UK) space progam is focused primarily on the Earth observation missions of the ESA. The UK national program complements ESA participation by funding announcement of opportunity instruments and preliminary technology development. Another aim is to sensitize users to the services which can be provided from space. Major challenges lie ahead in the area of data handling. The UK views data as a resource with a 'value', but the international exchange of research data must be encouraged. Data must also be held in a form which is accessible and comprehensible to a variety of interdisciplinary users.
