The economy of West and Central African countries is dependent upon overseas trade. Consequently transport costs in connection with exports and imports are essential for the economies of these countries. Port transit costs are obviously one of the heaviest cost factors affecting foreign trade. Reduced port costs and improved efficiency of port transit activities are of utmost importance for facilitating overseas trade. In order to improve port operations the authors suggest that training programs for port personnel should be introduced.
