A state of the art assessment and experimental evaluation of motorcycle advanced hydraulic disc brake systems are reported. Motorcycle brake system requirements and technology are reviewed. A contemporary large street motorcycle was fitted with seven candidate conventional improvements, and full scale tests were conducted to compare these with baseline. A prototype all-mechanical anti-lock brake system was installed and evaluated. The feasibility of variable proportioned brake systems for motorcycles was investigated and a preliminary design prepared. Results showed strong advantages of antilock on wet (low SN) surfaces, and examined other practical aspects of antilock.
