The main objective of the study was to enable recommendations to be made regarding the safety of passenger service vehicles (PSVs). Following a pilot study, a data gathering system was developed for use in the National PSV Accident Survey. The objectives of the survey were to set up a data collection system adapted to the requirements of PSV accident analysis and to collect data on some 5000 accidents; to establish a databank on design features of PSV fleets; and to identify factors particularly relating to construction having a bearing on PSV accidents. Part I of the report details survey techniques, data collected and the use of the computerized databank; Part 2 is concerned with accident types and compares vehicle type and casualty position; Part 3 details information concerning casualty types and injury characteristics; Part 4 concentrates on bus design features relating to accident situations; and Part 5 analyses design trends in bus development.
