The Ariane 5 MK2 configuration is presented together with the status of the Vulcain MK2 engine, an updated derivative of the Vulcain engine for use on an Ariane 5 MK2 launcher, and subsystem studies (thrust chamber, hydrogen and oxygen tubopump, gas generator). The new Ariane 5 MK2 launcher, available at the end of the year 2000, will offer a 10 to 15 percent payload gain compared to Ariane 5 with no increase in launch cost.
