A general overview is given of the status of a research program for the analysis and design of a Forster type infinitely variable transmission for improving passenger car fuel economy. The four basic areas discussed are: design analysis; performance and fuel economy analysis, transmission layout, and test rig evaluation of the traction mechanism. (ERA citation 01:013572)
