The statistical data on the known orbiting population of objects is presented and analyzed. Several methods for determining the probability of collision in orbit are described. Collision probabilities for low and geosynchronous orbits are evaluated. Potential operational and design policies for reducing the collision hazard and minimizing the proliferation of debris in space are examined. (Author)
