The various purposes for which databases can be used are discussed with a closer look at the evolution of databases for spacecraft telemetry processing systems. Efficiency and feasibility aspects are considered. Current trends in the generation of spacecraft telemetry databases are reviewed, and future trends in database technology are discussed. The use of expert systems in fault diagnosis, operator assistance in responding to spacecraft anomalies and other such applications is discussed
