After a presentation of the principle of piloted vehicle mechanics, the study of the aircraft longitudinal movement is undertaken. Assuming that the pilot counters with his lateral controls any sideslip and that the aircraft plane of symmetry is vertical, the trajectory, depending on the positions of the engine throttles and vertical controls in the hands of the pilot, is described in that same vertical plane. The natural modes (angle of attack oscillation, phugoid, aperiodic motion) of the small movements around the straight and level flight, the response to the pilot's commands, and the equilibrium stability are studied. The small lateral movements around the straight and level flight (dynamic stability, definition of the three natural modes: roll, spiral movement, and Dutch roll) are studied, together with the aircraft response to lateral controls. The small movements of the aircraft around the stabilized level flight in rotation (9th order free movement and response to surface controls and engine control) is also discussed. The assumptions of separation of longitudinal and lateral movements around the stabilized straight and level flight are validated.
