A technique is developed that allows the albedo of the earth's surface to be inferred from the SMS-1 satellite measurements of the earth-atmosphere system brightness. The technique uses simultaneous satellite and aircraft measurements from the SMS-1 and the NCAR Sabreliner during the GATE in 1974.
