The aim of this study was to investigate effects on car driving performance from participating in 'Vatternrundan', a non-competitive bicycle race of super marathon type (300 km distance), which for most participants requires 12-20 hours of cycling. The majority of participants get no sleep on the night of the race. Six subjects were tested in a very sophisticated driving simulator after completion of the race. Their task was to drive a 50 km distance in as short time as possible. The road was narrow and had horizontal as well as vertical curves. The friction properties varied. Losing control of the car, thereby leaving the road, resulted in a crash and thus prolonged driving time. Subjects were tested on two occasions during the day: as soon as possible after having completed the race (within one hour), and six hours later. They acted as their own controls; three of them were tested at corresponding times before the race and the other three several days after the race. No effects from participation in the race were found on either occasion.
