This report describes current endeavors to identify whether cardiopulmonary fitness can positively influence flight performance in a tactical fighter community. Population analyses of 111 subjects consisting of experienced aviators and student naval aviators present evidence that the U.S. naval aviation pilot community is in an above average state of physical fitness with less than average coronary heart disease potential. Correlations found in this study between cardiopulmonary fitness and psychophysiological responses that occur during simulated and/or actual flight operations present strong evidence that flight performance could be favorably affected.
