A methodology, using finite element analysis techniques, has been developed for the determination of the deformation of clay soils under moving track loads. The Ramberg-Osgood formula has been used to represent the nonlinear stress-strain properties of clay soils. The DYCAST finite element code of nonlinear, elastic-plastic, dynamic structural analysis has been used for the determination of ground deformations beneath moving track loads. The effect of variations in pressure distribution and speed of travel on ground deformation and associated motion resistance has been analyzed and found to be significant. (Author)
