The effects of transportation and traffic have a deep influence on society everywhere. This survey is deliberately limited primarily to the point of view of Finland. The background of the author also leads to the fact that the subject is mainly approached from the angle of road transportation and the technology of road vehicles. Sustainable development can rationally be realized only if all matters, even those harmful to the environment, are taken into consideration on their real, not emotional merits, and then the necessary schemes of development are derived on the basis of proven knowledge. We certainly cannot afford to continue the partially oversized and overprotectionistic environmental actions as in past decades, but we can afford rationalized actions and well-considered development of transportation systems. This survey expresses the views of 20 Finnish scientists on sustainable development in the transportation sector.
