The pilot study Freight distribution in rural areas is dealing with coordinated freight distribution in mainly the rural areas of Sweden. The concept and related issues have been analyzed in order to identify the major pros and cons in order to identify the major issues that should be addressed in a future research program. The specific activities in three communities in northern Sweden have been studied, the communities of Pitea, Lulea and Skelleftea. The main focus has been on Pitea community. In Pitea an EC financed pilot project was carried out during the period of September 6-November 26, 1999, with the object to gain some practical experience gained by the different parties concerned, i.e. purchasing agents of the community council, the distributing companies and the personnel in the public service sector. In Skelleftea and Lulea a set of simulation have been carried out in order to preliminarily assess the savings potential as a basis for future in-depth studies. These simulations have been made with the software packages ArcView and TransCAD. The overall experience of the pilot study on freight distribution in rural areas indicates that considerable advantages can be obtained with regard to traffic safety; the local environment, time savings and costs. The consequences in terms of traffic safety and the local environment demonstrate the most certain positive effects, mainly depending on a reduced number of vehicles and vehicle movements.
