The report is designed to provide a single source of sketch planning data on the most important performance characteristics of comtemporary urban transportation systems in a format that lends it self to easy reference. The seventh update of the publication, the handbook does not deal explicitly with passenger demand, but assesses only the supply or performance characteristics of selected systems. Separate chapters deal with rail transit; bus transit; automobiles, trucks, and the highway system; high occupancy vehicle lanes, and automated guideway transit. Each chapter includes a brief introduction and a series of tables providing quantitative information on system characteristics.
