The pogo phenomenon is described and studies of the pogo effect conducted to design the Ariane pogo correction system (PCS) are outlined. The PCS consists of several correction devices which form part of the launch vehicle feed lines and ancillary equipment. Studies and tests indicate that it should be possible to eliminate pogo instabilities on Ariane by employing the PCS. It is intended to use the PCS on the launch vehicle's first and second stages only, since it is demonstrated that there is much less risk of vibrational coupling occurring during firing of the vehicle's third stage.
