Stages in designing Soviet manned and unmanned spacecraft are traced historically. Emphasis is placed on the Salyut 4 space station. The joint U.S.-U.S.S.R. Apollo-Soyuz mission is detailed as an example of a trend of joint space flights between the two countries, for which compatible equipment for approach and docking had to be designed and flight-tested.
