The Hermes crew escape module (CEM) is discussed. The CEM is a leakproof volume containing the cockpit and workstation in a front part designed from aerodynamic and ergonomic considerations, closed at the rear by a bulkhead. The floor is designed to sustain impact loads, leading to the choice of titanium for the cabin. Communication between the cabin and the cargo bay is assured by a tunnel closed by a hatch when insulation of the crew in the cabin is needed. The CEM can be ejected at any stage of the flight, from prelaunch to landing. The CEM can withstand a 24hr delay in recovery, e.g., in case of ditching in the ocean.
