A pilot project was begun in Lafayette and Saline Counties because they had the highest overall documented unmet need for transportation services for the elderly, low income and persons with disabilities among our 13-country service area. The major transportation providers in the two countries had problems that spanned both countries and the major transportation providers were committed to making the project work. The original goals for the Special Transportation Coordination Project were; (1) to establish a Special Transportation Coordination organization; (2) to implement a pilot project coordinating transportation in two countries designed to increase transportation while maintaining existing funding; (3) to formulate workable solutions to barriers against coordination, resulting in new policy formation as necessary; and (4) to raise awareness of the needs for transportation. leading to increased capacity and alternatives for the provision of transportation.
