The SHINKAI 6500, a manned submergence research vehicle for the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC), successfully marked 6,527 m dive in sea trials and was delivered to JAMSTEC on November 28, 1989. The vehicle is able to dive to 6,500 m dept and explore the slopes of deep trenches around Japan. The vehicle is small in size and light in weight, and has excellent maneuverablity and advanced research and observation systems. The paper presents the technology and design features of SHINKAI 6500.
