Spacecraft missions were analyzed, and mission classes were established for data handling configurations. Parameters relevant for the definition on an onboard data handling (OBDH) configuration were cataloged. Requirements for each mission class were quantified. Block diagrams of OBDH configurations were drawn and a preferred OBDH solution was investigated. Data acquisition, telemetry, housekeeping, onboard control, telecommand, command processing, and user requirements were studied. A decentralized OBDH system requiring synchronous or asynchronous protocols for data exchange is proposed.
