A freewing is a wing which is free to rotate about a spanwise axis, of having a fixed position to the fuselage of an airplane. The angle of attack of a pure freewing is thus determine only by the aerodynamic forces on the wing itself. A freewing should give an airplane great advantages in terms of safety and ridecomfort. This report deals with the principles and applications of a freewing. A historical overview of freewing-airplanes is given, after which the principles of the freewing are treated. The equations of motion of a freewing aircraft are derived and the unsteady aerodynamic forces and moments are added to this equation. Because the resulting system of equations can not be integrated directly, the frequency-response is derived. Then the consequences of applying a freewing to an existing aircraft, the Cessna Turbo-Centurion, with repsect to its performances and gust sensitivity are examined. A freewing could be a possible passive system to reduce the gust sensitivity of a Ballistocraft, an autonomous airplane for micro-gravity research. The Ballistocraft itself is treated, after which the possibilities of applying a freewing tothe Ballistocraft are looked at.
