A survey of bus passengers was administered at bus stops to determine whether non-overlapping catchments could be defined for bus routes in a situation where people had some degree of choice. The shortest apparent walkable distance was coded for each respondent between their home and the bus stop they used. The grid references of the bus stops were also coded to 10 meter accuracy so it was possible to work out the straight line distance between home and bus stop using Pythagorean geometry. Thus, a data file was produced containing questionnaire data on a bus journey, together with social characteristics data, as well as reported walk time to bus stop, the (most likely) measured distance, and the straight line distance.
