The problem of being able to draw conclusions from a variety (i.e., a matrix) of experimental measures in a complex task situation is discussed. Dealing with contradictory outcomes, the designating of artefacts, and formulating final conclusions without the (a-priori) availability of a superior method for evaluating other methods were examined in an in-flight study concerning the assessment of pilot workload under various instrument approach conditions for a fixed-wing (civil) transport aircraft. The experimental findings were compared with the results of an in-flight experiment dealing with pilot workload and performance during helicopter (instrument-flying) tasks. Subjective ratings, physiological measurements, and task performance measurements are assessed. A strategy for the formulation of final conclusions based on the outcomes of a matrix of measures is suggested.
