The most significant improvement to the United Kingdom's Military Air Transport Force in recent years is described: the procurement of the Lockheed L1011 Tristar aircraft into the RAF service. The reasons behind the introduction of the Tristar, and its subsequent modifications into three very capable tanker, freighter, and passenger carrying variants are outlined. Moreover, some of the aircraft's capabilities and drawbacks are discussed. In addition, and with a view to the future, some of the cost disadvantages of an aging air transport fleet are considered. Furthermore, the RAF approach to considering a timescale for the introduction of a possible replacement transport aircraft is presented.
