The Airline Deregulation Act, enacted in 1978, gradually removed government economic regulation of carrier route and pricing decisions. After reviewing the history of government regulation of the industry and describing the deregulation process, the study offers a systematic analysis of the economic performance of the deregulated industry. Deregulation has brought substantial changes to the formerly regulated carrier's route networks and pricing policies. It also has allowed new carriers, often with lower costs and different types of service, to provide scheduled interstate service. In addition to analyzing these changes, the study considers the impact of deregulation on the convenience of air service, most notably to small communities. It also examines whether deregulated airline markets are operating competitively.
