A description is given of an alternative automobile fuels research program to assess the feasibility of replacing petroleum as the fuel for highway vehicles in the 1985 to 2000 and beyond time frame. Topics discussed include: (1) a summary and overview; (2) an analysis of the transportation energy problem and its solution; (3) the justification for a Federal role; (4) technology assessment summary; (5) goals and strategy of the program; and (6) scope of the program.
