A knowledge base of aircraft fire safety regulations is being developed using Hyperties, a hypermedia engine based on an encyclopedia metaphor. This knowledge base attempts to consolidate in one place the current fire safety regulations related to commercial aircraft promulgated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), along with background information on the bases for these regulations and on the fire test methods adopted by the regulations. The use of a hypermedia engine permits the unprecedented storage, linkage, and retrieval of textual, graphic, audio, and video information. Electronic links between related topics in a knowledge base permit the user to rapidly transfer between topics in order to follow a common thread among different topics.
