It is proposed to establish for the space shuttle program a main engine component and subsystem test site at Santa Susana Field Laboratory, Santa Susana, California. Existing facilities, equipment and systems provided under the Apollo Program are capable, with modifications, of supporting the testing requirements. The one environmental concern is that the space shuttle main engine is a noise generator. However the potential for adverse impact on the surrounding communities is small, since the predicted noise levels are well below those noted to induce community reaction. Additionally, tests will be conducted only when meteorological conditions will provide reductions in noise levels by refracting the acoustic energy upward from the ground plane where the energy can be dissipated.
