A study has been undertaken to demonstrate the application of near infrared (NIR) tunable diode lasers to remote measurements of the components and temperature of vehicle exhausts. Laboratory studies have shown the ability of using these tunable diode lasers to measure H2O, NO2, C2H2, CH4, CO and CO2. A prototype instrument was able to detect H2O, CO and CO2 directly in automobile exhaust and CH4 and C2H2 in bag samples of automobile exhaust. A prototype commercial instrument called the LASAIR-R was constructed and used for comparison measurements with an instrumented Ford Aerostar test vehicle in a dynamometer laboratory at the Ford Motor Company Research Laboratory, Dearborn, Michigan during February 1994. Refinements to the LASAIR-R system to permit automatic laser temperature control and frequency line locking along with real-time zeroing of the instrument are underway and an on-road comparison at the Ford test track with the Aerostar is scheduled for the end of May, 1994.
