Aerial surveys for manatees (Trichechus manatus) and several sea turtles (Leatherback, Dermochelys coriacea; Green, Chelonia mydas; Hawksbill, Eretmochelys imbricata; Loggerhead, Caretta caretta; and Olive Ridley, Lepidochelys olivacia) were conducted monthly around Puerto Rico and weekly around Roosevelt Roads Naval Station and Vieques Island from March 1984 through March 1985. Cape Hart sewage treatment plant was monitored from shore at least twice a month. Interviews were used to assess current conservation problems. Manatee sightings around Puerto Rico were concentrated along the south central coast and around Roosevelt Roads Naval Station and Vieques Island. Sea turtles were sighted most frequently along the northern coast of Puerto Rico and around Vieques Island.
