Helicopter designers have always been concerned with fatigue phenomena and the experience developed in this field in NATO countries has resulted in fatigue requirements which appear to have very similar objectives and philosphies. This Report may be considered as a detailed and valuable review of current fatigue requirements and substantiation procedures in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and France in the field of Helicopter Fatigue. Fatigue specialists are aware of the rather uncomfortable situation which is reflected through these papers; although general requirements and specifications seem to be very similar, approved procedures applied by manufacturers may sometimes appear to be rather arbitrary or, in some cases, to differ significantly from one firm to another. The material collected in this publication must be considered as a helpful survey to be used by helicopter specialists with a view to intensifying cooperative action within the NATO community towards improvement, rationalization and standardization of helicopter service life prediction.
