The objective of the study is to identify the role of alternative transportation systems in providing access to special areas, such as airports, universities, shopping centers, hospitals, etc. A computerized model was developed and applied to an urban university, located in a hypothetical city. Results indicate that efficient, frequent, low cost service will encourage increased patronage by the model university community. To alleviate the expense of providing costly service additions to the entire regional transit system, specialized transit services such as express shuttle bus service might be instituted.
