In May 1982 the University of Durham began a project to evaluate the feasibility of hybrid electric vehicles. The broad aim of the project was to see if a hybrid electric vehicle could in some way, help reduce the dependency of the road transport sector on petroleum based fuels. To evaluate the benefits to be obtained from hybrid vehicles, computer simulation of the vehicles performance over standard driving cycles was used. The development of such a road vehicle simulation computer program was to be part of the project. (ERA citation 13:018530)
