A short history of ESA involvement in parts activities is presented, and the role of ESA discussed. Tools to control parts and their procurement by a customer are presented based on recent project experience. The active and successful use of support from a well-experienced parts engineer and a laboratory group as an important customer tool is described, noting the use of destructive physical analysis. Speculations are made with regard to future ESA involvement and ESA/contractor cooperation in parts procurement.
