The architect's framework which will describe the myriad of trends and practical conditions that influence the data system architect's design choices in developing the data systems architectures of the 1990's is discussed. The architectural choices are influenced by mission trends, information systems trends, technology trends and practical considerations such as available resources and schedules. These considerations, which will determine architectural choices, are described. A set of guidelines is presented for consideration, based on the recent experience of the author in developing a large scale, distributed system for spacecraft control.
