The purpose of the survey was to identify record files related to motor vehicle and traffic safety that are maintained by private enterprises. Approximately 100 organizations were contacted in 11 different categories of private industry. The record files that were located contain data and information on accidents, drivers, mechanics, and motor vehicle maintenance and repair. The survey was conducted at two levels of intensity: high-intensity inventories that provide an in-depth view of the traffic records of a representative firm in each category, and low-intensity inventories that identify record files of other organizations.
