Highway engineers have to consider a variety of factors in the environmental impact of any highway project. This manual explains the interaction between air pollutant sources and meteorological conditions contributing to the ambient air quality of a community. Air pollutant sources within a highway corridor normally include stationary and mobile sources. Stationary sources include domestic heaters, industrial installations and power plants. Mobile sources include motor vehicle traffic on highways, local roads and streets. Guidelines are presented to: (1) determine the present ambient air quality along a proposed highway corridor from existing air monitoring station data, (2) determine the present ambient air quality by performing an on-site air quality survey, and (3) perform a mesoscale analysis of ambient air quality.
