An earlier report concluded that doppler radar designed for portable traffic signals could be used at certain permanent traffic signal sites instead of inductive loop detectors. The latter result in significant economic and energy losses because of faulty operation. The radar alternative might be cheaper and more reliable. It was suggested in the earlier report that characteristics of the radar units limited scope for use at Pelican Crossings to where the traffic speed is less than 50km/h. The drawback with radar is that it does not accurately detect vehicles at a given point on the approach to signals. The performance of three models in this regard was determined by site tests described in the present report. Correlation was found to exist between variation in detection distance and number of vehicles receding on the far side of the road, number of vehicles approaching and speed of approaching vehicles. Guidelines supplement to those in the previous report are given on suitability of radar, time setting and alignment considerations.
