Results are presented of a feasibility study for mathematically simulating the motions, and resulting accidents, for recreational boats in waves. The mathematical models used to predict boat motions are based on a time domain approach and also by means of (linear) frequency response methods. Results of the simulations are compared with full scale data for two different recreational boats, for which scale model test data was also available. The particular accident simulations carried out considered both swamping and passenger loss of balance.
