A state-of-art review and background research reveals a number of opinions as to the preferred techniques for providing grounding and lightning protection of electronic equipment and systems. The Systems Research and Development Service and the Flight Standards Service of the Federal Aviation Administration in conjunction with the Florida Institute of Technology conducted a workshop which brought together distinguished experts in the fields of grounding, lightning phenomenology and transient protection. This year the format of the workshop was expanded to include the effects of direct strikes and induced lightning on aircraft and their contents as well as lightning detection and warning systems. This report contains the papers presented at the workshop. A supplementary report will be issued containing the papers which were not available for printing before the workshop. (Author)
