The patent application concerns a vehicle tracking system comprising a plurality of antenna loops buried under a roadway. The loops are divided into groups and are excited by small transmitters in the vehicles being monitored. Associated with each group of loops is a receiving detector. Also associated with each group is a scanner that causes a switch to individually and sequentially connect the loops to the detector. When the detector produces an output, indicating that a vehicle is near the loop being sampled, an inhibit device stops the scanner thus locking the loop that is excited to the detector. A binary number identifying the loop that is excited is placed in an address register and is coupled by a buss to a central control unit. Thus, the location of vehicles is found by reading the addresses on the buss.
