The areas of the economy most receptive to technology transfer, or which are most likely to readily absorb technological innovations were identified. Industrial opinion was solicited concerning the promotion of technical innovations resulting from activities in the European Space Agency (ESA). The sectors where most technology transfer occurs are telecommunications, optics, solar energy, and data processing. The monetary value of the ESA contribution has been determined for various technical sectors. In the view of industry, ESA has a role to play in both fundamental research, and in reducing costs of development. The patent system must be ameliorized within the member states to meet competition in external markets.
