This report describes the work done in assessing the technical requirements for high powered single screw propulsion of merchant ships. A literature search and personal interviews were conducted to ascertain the maximum power currently in use in single screw ships, the availability of high power components for ships, and problems encountered in service. The collected data were analyzed, possible problem areas identified, the state of the art was determined, research requirements are identified and a research and development program is presented which, if carried out, will permit the design and construction of single screw ships of continuously increasing power.
