The launching of the first United States meteorological spacecraft (TIROS I) in 1960 opened an age where development of techniques for remote sensing of meteorological phenomena from space has become increasingly prevalent. Through 1968 and into 1969, the primary meteorological spacecraft sub system for routinely viewing the world's weather has been the vidicon camera, a descendent of the TIROS I camera system. The intent of this paper is to present a brief summary of observations of vidicon camera operation, as well as to describe the techniques used in camera calibration and evaluation both before and after spacecraft launch. Particular emphasis is placed on demonstrating to the researcher the limitations of the data, whether originated in the camera system or resulting from processing. (Author)
