The most useful characteristics for maritime aids-to-navigation lights has been discussed. A study of the mariner's ability to take bearings on flashing lights is reported. By correlating the results of this study with information already available concerning the efficiency and conspicuity of flashing lights, conclusions are reached regarding the most useful characteristics for aids-to-navigation lights.
