It is a pleasure to submit the Panama Canal Commission annual report for Fiscal Year 1993. This past year, the Canal organization celebrated its 79th anniversary of successful operation. For the fourteenth year under the Panama Canal Treaty, the Panama Canal Commission provided safe and efficient transit service to world shipping, recording 12,257 oceangoing transits and 1,463 smaller vessel transits. Most elements of Canal traffic declined for the second consecutive year due to a general weakness in the economies of the United States, Japan and Europe, combined with developments in certain trades which adversely impacted on commodity flows through the waterways.
