This paper is based on the author's experience on board the Norwegian automated longliner M/S FORDE JR. It describes two fishing trips during the winter of 1980-1981, one three weeks long and the other six weeks long. The two trips differed in that the species of fish sought and processing procedure on board the ship varied. This experience revealed a number of differences between longlining in Alaska and Norway.
