The different aspects of acoustic direction finding of flying helicopters are presented. The sound field radiated by flying helicopters can be sampled with acoustic antennas and subsequently evaluated by signal processing. The criteria for the design of a suitable antenna configuration are presented. The applied frequency-selective pressure gradient direction finding method as well as the signal evaluation are discussed. Based on the results of tests, the direction finding capability and the good spatial separation of targets, even helicopters of the same type, are demonstrated.
